Exploring the Charm of Intangible Cultural Heritage, Experiencing the Elegance of Traditional Culture

(By Correspondent Liu Junming) Chinese culture has a long history, and the intangible cultural heritage is particularly dazzling. In today’s era where cultural confidence is increasingly prominent, delving into the charm of intangible cultural heritage holds profound significance.  Foreign Language School launched a field trip of exploring intangible cultural heritage on December 12, 2024. Teachers from the “An Overview of Chinese Culture” course construction team led students to visit the Han Kou Intangible Cultural Heritage Park, including the Ren Wei Han Embroidery Studio, the Traditional Bronze Percussion Instruments Casting Technique Studio, and other intangible cultural heritage projects. The aim was to consolidate and expand classroom learning through practice, ignite students' love for China, cultivate their ability to tell China’s stories in English, and better promote course-based ideological and political education, enhancing students' comprehensive qualities.

Upon arriving at the Han Kou Intangible Cultural Heritage Park, the first stop was the Ren Wei Han Embroidery Studio. The exquisite Han embroidery works on display were breathtaking. Han embroidery is renowned for its rich Jingchu local characteristics and exquisite embroidery techniques, with vibrant colors and diverse stitching methods. The embroiderers’ skillful needlework demonstrated their craftsmanship. With detailed explanations from the staff, the teachers and students gained a deeper understanding of the historical origins, stitching characteristics, and cultural connotations of Han embroidery, from traditional patterns of flowers, birds, fish, and insects to modern innovative themes, as Han embroidery continues to develop in its inheritance.

Next, they visited the Traditional Bronze Percussion Instruments Casting Technique Studio. The studio showcased a variety of bronze percussion instruments, each with a simple yet elegant design and exquisite decorations. The studio's instructornot only introduced the origin and development of bronze percussion instruments and the historical heritage and wisdom they embody but also gave a special explanation of several famous bronzes, such as the marvel and greatness of Zeng Hou Yi chime bells. The students curiously struck these bronze instruments, listening intently to the melodies, as if they could hear the melodious ancient music from thousands of years ago, deeply feeling the weight and charm of culture.

During the visit, the teachers guided the students to think about how to introduce these intangible cultural heritages in English. The students actively discussed and shared many creative ideas and suggestions. They expressed their determination to understand the profound Chinese culture, improve their English proficiency and cultural literacy, and tell the stories of China’s intangible cultural heritage to the world, allowing more international friends to understand and appreciate China’s traditional culture.

Luo Xiaoli, the leading teacher of this activity, said that visiting intangible cultural heritage studios in person and experiencing the charm of intangible cultural heritage was a vivid and meaningful cultural study trip. It not only helps cultivate students’ love for traditional culture but also inspires their sense of mission and responsibility to spread Chinese culture in English, contributing to the inheritance and international dissemination of intangible cultural heritage.

This journey of exploring intangible cultural heritage left a profound impression on the teachers and students and added rich practical materials to “An Overview of Chinese Culture” course. In the future, they will continue to explore and advance on the path of inheriting and internationally disseminating intangible cultural heritage.
