Journey to Explore Historical Imprints, Gaining Insights into the Spirit of Reform Pioneers
—A Visit to the Zhang Zhidong Memorial Hall
(Correspondents: Zhou Xueting, Yun Xingyue) The liberation movement of the Chinese nation has been magnificent and profound, and the spirit of modern reform pioneers remains timeless. To deepen students’ understanding of this pioneering spirit and cultivate their patriotism, the 2024 English Jingchu Excellent Teachers Class of the School of Foreign Languages organized an educational excursion to the Zhang Zhidong Memorial Hall in Wuhan on March 30, 2025. Themed Exploring Historical Imprints, Inheriting the Spirit of Reform, the activity aimed to provide students with firsthand experience in learning about the reform efforts led by Zhang Zhidong, allowing them to reflect on the legacy of reform pioneers while enhancing their ability to narrate Chinese history in English. This initiative sought to foster a deeper integration of historical-cultural literacy and professional competence.
As the teachers and students stepped into the memorial hall and wandered through the rooms where Zhang Zhidong once lived, they came across a collection of precious historical photographs and handwritten manuscripts. It was as if they could glimpse his silhouette under the dim lamplight, tirelessly drafting plans and plotting for the nation’s revitalization. As a leading reformer of his time, Zhang Zhidong and his contemporaries advocated the principle of Chinese Learning as the Foundation, Western Learning for Practical Application, which profoundly influenced modern China’s industrial and educational development. The exhibition, structured around three themes—National Strengthening Through Westernization, Educational Innovation, and Industrial Patriotism—offered a panoramic view of Zhang Zhidong’s remarkable contributions during the late Qing Dynasty’s social transformation. Ms. Luo Xiaoli elaborated on milestone achievements such as his establishment of the Hanyang Iron Works and the Ziqiang School (the precursor to Wuhan University). The students listened attentively, gaining a profound appreciation for the essence of the reform pioneers’ philosophy. Artifacts on display, including the engraved edition of Exhortation to Learning and models of industrial machinery, vividly recreated the era’s pursuit of wealth and power during the Westernization Movement.
In the Educational Innovation section, the students were deeply moved by Zhang Zhidong’s efforts to promote modern education. His advocacy for broadening talent cultivation and addressing contemporary affairs remains relevant to modern pedagogy. Ms. Luo encouraged students to reflect on how they, as future English teachers, could draw inspiration from Zhang Zhidong’s educational philosophy and excel in their profession. Additionally, the group engaged in lively discussions on how to introduce Zhang Zhidong’s educational reforms and their lasting impact on modern China to international audiences in English. Proposals included comparative studies of Chinese and Western educational history and the creation of bilingual guided tour videos, aiming to showcase the wisdom and dedication of this founding figure of modern Chinese education to the world.
Through this educational excursion, the students came to a profound realization: history is not merely a memory but a mirror for contemporary development. Ms. Luo emphasized that during China’s challenging times, late Qing officials like Zhang Zhidong demonstrated an indomitable spirit of reform and unwavering patriotism—qualities that continue to earn profound respect and admiration. More than a retrospective on history, this journey served as a spiritual awakening for the participants. It is believed that in the days to come, this legacy will inspire them to forge ahead, striving to become exceptional educators and contributing their strength to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
