Successful Launching of English Corner Activity, Exploring the Joys of English Learning
On the evening of September 18th, the English Corner event hosted by the School of Foreign Languages unfolded in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere. Students from Class 1 to Class 3 of the English major of 2024, along with two foreign teachers Thando, Hannah and a Chinese teacher Xu Changming, participated in this activity.
This session featured a unique format: no fixed theme or host. Participants were encouraged to form groups freely and engage in English conversations, aiming to provide everyone with an authentic opportunity to practice spoken English.
Throughout the event, the classroom was filled with lively English discussions. Teachers and students interacted as equals, delving into topics close to their hearts—university life, cultural differences, hobbies, and more. The foreign teachers, drawing on their rich teaching experience and humorous communication style, skillfully guided and motivated students to express themselves boldly. This approach not only helped participants overcome language barriers but also allowed them to refine their fluency in a stress-free environment.
The success of the English Corner lies in its dual impact: it offered students a practical platform to hone their English skills and created opportunities of interaction between teachers and students. Many participants shared that the activity significantly boosted their confidence in using English. "I used to feel nervous speaking English in public, but tonight’s free-flowing conversations made me realize that making mistakes is part of learning," said a sophomore majoring in English. Another student added, "The teachers’ encouragement gave me the push I needed to speak up more—I now feel more comfortable expressing my thoughts in English".
The School of Foreign Languages plans to make the English Corner a regular fixture on campus. By organizing similar events, the school aims to create more opportunities for students to immerse themselves in English practice, ultimately enhancing their overall language proficiency and cross-cultural communication competence.
