From Outstanding Student to Inspiring Teacher: Challenges and Reflections for a High School Educator

(Contributor: Long Shijie) To help the 2025 cohort of undergraduate English Education majors clarify their career paths and master core job-seeking skills, the School of Foreign Languages held a special sharing session on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 2:00 PM in Lecture Hall 1 of the Library. The event, titled “From Student to Teacher: Challenges, Reflections, and Interview Advice,” featured Ren Chong, a distinguished alumnus from the class of 2015 and a key teacher at Wuhan No. 14 High School. This event directly addressed the core concerns of student teachers during their developmental stage, empowering them to begin their teaching careers with confidence through the authentic growth narrative and precise guidance of a frontline master teacher.

At the beginning of the lecture, Department Director Chen Xi extended a warm welcome to alumnus Ren Chong for returning to his alma mater. She noted that inviting accomplished alumni from the front lines of teaching to share their experiences is a key initiative for the school to innovate its talent cultivation model and strengthen vocational guidance for student teachers. She expressed her hope that the students would draw inspiration from their senior’s journey.

I. Leading by Example: Unveiling the Transition Challenges and Core Breakthroughs from “Student” to “Teacher”

From the relatable perspective of someone who has walked the path, Ren Chong first shared his journey of transformation from a student at the School of Foreign Languages of Hubei University of Education to an outstanding young teacher in Wuchang District. He vividly likened this process to a “butterfly breaking out of its cocoon” and identified three key challenges: bridging the gap between theory and practice, shifting from a learning to a teaching mindset, and adjusting from campus life to the professional workplace. Drawing on his experiences teaching district--and city--level public demonstration classes and participating in academic research projects, he emphasized that “proactively seeking practical opportunities” and “continuously engaging in teaching reflection” are the surefire ways to overcome these challenges. “Every public demonstration class you refine and every competition you endure is a catalyst for accelerated growth,” he encouraged the students, urging them to step out of their comfort zones and assume the role of a teacher ahead of schedule.

II. Deep Reflections: Teaching Competence and Professional Growth from a Test-Setter’s Perspective

As a member of the Wuhan Municipal Central Curriculum Development Group, a setter for district--and city--level diagnostic exams, and an author and editor of several bestselling supplementary teaching materials, Ren Chong shared his unique understanding of the essence of high school English teaching from a “test-setter’s” viewpoint. He pointed out that an exceptional teacher must not only be skilled at “delivering lessons” but also be proficient in “assessment” and adept at “research.” By showcasing test questions he had designed and textbook chapters he had written, he illustrated how studying the curriculum standards and understanding testing patterns can, in turn, inform teaching, enabling precise and effective instruction. “The process of setting an exam is the most profound way to organize and reconstruct the knowledge system of a subject,” he explained. This perspective was a real eye-opener for the students, giving them a deep appreciation for the importance of research skills in the professional development of a teacher.

III. Practical Toolkit: Precise Strategies and Detailed Preparation for Job Interviews

In the most practical segment of the session, Ren Chong generously shared his extensive experience as both an interviewer and a competition participant. He broke down the elements of a successful interview into: a solid and impressive demonstration of a micro-lesson, a clear and logical defense of one’s teaching philosophy, and a confident and professional demeanor. He specifically reminded the students that in a micro-lesson, beyond the instructional design, details such as blackboard writing, intonation and pronunciation, and the ability to simulate student-teacher interaction are also key focal points for the interview panel. Drawing on his experience winning multiple teaching skills competition awards, he provided on-the-spot tips on designing an engaging opening, highlighting key and difficult points, and embodying the concepts of the new curriculum standards, offering a highly actionable “checklist.”

During the Q&A session, Ren Chong, leveraging his professional certifications in translation and interpreting as well as his experience as an interviewer, provided a detailed analysis of various problems students might encounter in their studies and interviews. The atmosphere was lively and engaging.

The lecture was a “timely rain,” resolving the prospective anxieties of new student teachers with the most authentic growth map and practical strategies from a frontline educator. The students unanimously agreed that senior Ren Chong’s sharing was “full of substance,” “down-to-earth and replicable.” It not only strengthened their identification with the teaching profession but also provided them with a clear roadmap for their university growth and job-seeking preparations. The School of Foreign Languages will continue to deepen its alumni mentorship platform, transforming the valuable experiences of outstanding alumni into high-quality resources for the training of student teachers, helping them take a steady first step on their journey as educators.
